ATHENS — Vestal scored early, and pulled away late in a 5-0
season-opening win over Athens here Tuesday night in non-league girls
soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
Athens coach Rich Pitts said the loss will help his young squad in the long run.
“I thought we played hard the entire game,” he said.
“We
have some tactical things that showed up that we need to work on,”
added Pitts. “It was a tough match, but it definitely made us better as a
squad.”
Lilly Wlostowski scored in the seventh minute to give
the Lady Golden Bears a quick 1-0 lead, and Ava Schmidt scored in the
17th minute to up the advantage to 2-0, which is where it stood at the
intermission.
Brown scored nine minutes into the second half to
make it 3-0, and Bailey McDonald and Miller added goals late in the game
to provide the final margin.
Vestal, which opened the season with a 6-0 loss to Ithaca Friday, improves to 1-1 on the season.
Athens hosts Waverly Friday at 5:30 p.m.
