The Athens 8th A Junior High volleyball team bounced back from an earlier season loss to Wellsboro with a well-earned two-set victory at home on Monday.
The Wildcats secured a thrilling 28-26 win in Set 1, followed by a commanding 25-16 win in Set 2, improving their season record to 9-2.
The first set was a nail-biter, with Athens edging out Wellsboro 28-26 after a series of hard-fought rallies. Madison Sinsabaugh, Kayla Forbes, and Emilynn McQuay led the team from the service line, each contributing four points, with Sinsabaugh and McQuay adding a pair of aces. Walters dominated the net with three kills, while Lilli Miller added two. Defensively, Kayla Forbes, Madison Sinsabaugh, and libero Sorana Marica kept the team in the game with solid play.
In the second set, Athens took the lead early and never looked back, winning 25-16. Kayla Forbes was a standout, serving six points, including four aces. Jonica Walters added five points and three aces, while Sinsabaugh contributed four points and three aces. At the net, Moss, Walters, and Miller all made key kills to seal the win.
Athens 8th A, now 9-2 on the season, looks ahead to a home match against North Penn Liberty on Monday, October 7th as they continue their strong season.
The Athens 7th B team faced a tough Wellsboro squad, dropping two sets, 11-25 and 15-25. Arabella Robbins, Elizabeth Moss, Natalie Yale, and Adriana McClellan contributed points and aces, while Hannah Behm and Auriana Welch added kills. Defensively, Arabella Robbins had a standout night with solid passing and effort on the court. Despite the loss, the team showed tremendous teamwork and look to bounce back in their next match.
